Working with an Integrative Health Coach FAQ

What is an integrative health coach?

An integrative health coach is a trained professional who partners with you to achieve your health goals by considering all aspects of your life—mind, body, and spirit. Unlike a traditional approach that might focus only on symptoms, we look at the interconnectedness of nutrition, stress, sleep, movement, and emotional well-being to create a truly holistic and personalized plan.

How is a health coach different from a doctor?

A doctor's primary role is to diagnose and treat disease. My role as a health coach—and a Registered Nurse—is to complement your doctor's care. I help you implement their recommendations and build the sustainable, day-to-day lifestyle habits that are foundational to managing chronic illness and improving your quality of life. We focus on the "how" of getting healthy in your real, busy life.

Who do you typically work with?

I typically work with high-performing individuals, particularly women in the San Francisco Bay Area, who are navigating the challenges of a chronic condition like diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, or chronic fatigue. They are motivated to feel better but often feel overwhelmed, unheard, and unsure of the next steps to take.

I'm already so busy and tired. Will this just be another thing to add to my to-do list?

I completely understand this concern. My goal is to reduce your burden, not add to it. We work together to find small, manageable changes that fit into your existing life. It's about creating ease and sustainability, not adding more stress.

How long does a coaching engagement typically last?

This varies depending on your individual goals. Most clients find that a 3 to 6-month engagement provides the time needed to build lasting habits and see significant changes. We can discuss the best fit for you during our free discovery call.

What does a typical coaching session look like?

In a typical session, we'll start by celebrating your wins since our last meeting. Then, we'll discuss any challenges you encountered. The majority of our time is spent collaboratively problem-solving and setting a clear, achievable goal for you to focus on before our next session. It's a supportive, non-judgmental, and forward-focused conversation.

Do you offer virtual or in-person coaching?

I offer virtual coaching sessions via secure video call, allowing me to work with clients throughout California and beyond. This provides the most flexibility and comfort for my clients.

Chronic Illness Management (Diabetes, Heart Health, Autoimmune) FAQ

How can a health coach help with my diabetes?

As a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), I can help you go beyond the basics of blood sugar monitoring. We work on managing stress (which directly impacts blood sugar), creating an eating plan you can actually stick with, incorporating joyful movement, and navigating the emotional burnout that often comes with managing diabetes.

What is a holistic approach to heart health?

A holistic approach to heart health looks beyond just cholesterol numbers. We focus on reducing chronic inflammation, managing blood pressure through stress reduction techniques, improving sleep quality (which is crucial for heart repair), and adopting a heart-healthy diet rich in whole foods.

I have an autoimmune disease. How can you help?

With autoimmune conditions, a primary goal is to identify and reduce triggers of inflammation. We do this by focusing on gut health (where 70-80% of your immune system resides), adopting a personalized anti-inflammatory diet, and managing the stress that can often lead to flare-ups.

What is the link between gut health and chronic illness?

Modern research shows a profound connection between the health of your gut microbiome and chronic conditions. An imbalance in the gut can lead to increased intestinal permeability ("leaky gut"), which drives inflammation throughout the body. A key part of my coaching is helping you heal and support your gut health.

Can you help me with chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia?

Yes. For conditions like chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, we focus on calming the nervous system and reducing the body's overall inflammatory load. This involves gentle nutrition, stress management, improving sleep hygiene, and pacing activities to avoid the push-crash cycle.

Will I have to give up all the foods I love?

Absolutely not. My philosophy is about abundance, not deprivation. We focus on adding in delicious, nutrient-dense foods that nourish your body. We'll find healthy swaps and strategies so you can still enjoy food without feeling restricted or guilty.

I hate exercising. Do I have to go to the gym?

No. The best movement is the movement you enjoy and will do consistently. We'll explore different forms of joyful movement that work for your body, whether it's dancing in your kitchen, walking in nature, gentle yoga, or stretching.

Cannabis for Health: Safety & Science FAQ

(Disclaimer: This information is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Consult with your healthcare provider before using cannabis.)

What is a cannabis nurse?

A cannabis nurse is a licensed Registered Nurse who has specialized knowledge of cannabis, its effects on the body, and how it interacts with other medications. We provide evidence-based education and guidance to help people use cannabis safely and effectively for their health goals.

Is it legal to use cannabis for health in California?

Yes, both medical and adult-use (recreational) cannabis are legal in California for adults 21 and over. However, there are still regulations regarding where you can consume it and how much you can possess.

What's the difference between THC and CBD?

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces the "high." CBD (cannabidiol) is non-psychoactive and is often used to help with anxiety, pain, and inflammation without intoxication. Many therapeutic benefits come from using them together, known as the "entourage effect".

Can cannabis interact with my prescription medications?

Yes, this is a critical consideration. Cannabis can interact with many common medications, including blood thinners, blood pressure medication, and antidepressants. This is why it is essential to work with a knowledgeable healthcare professional, like a cannabis nurse, to ensure safety.

What is the best way to consume cannabis for health?

This depends on your goals. Inhalation (vaping or smoking) offers rapid onset but can have respiratory risks. Edibles offer long-lasting effects but can be difficult to dose. Tinctures (oils taken under the tongue) offer a good balance of controlled dosing and relatively quick onset. Topicals are excellent for localized pain without any psychoactive effects.

How do I find the right dose?

The universal rule for cannabis dosing is "start low and go slow." A therapeutic dose can be very small, and more is not always better. We would work together to find the minimum effective dose that provides you with symptom relief with the fewest side effects.

What are terpenes?

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in cannabis and many other plants. They are responsible for the plant's scent (like citrus, pine, or floral) and also have their own therapeutic effects. For example, the terpene linalool (also found in lavender) can promote relaxation.

Can I get addicted to cannabis?

Yes, it is possible to develop a cannabis use disorder, though the risk is lower than with many other substances. Signs can include using more than intended or having it interfere with daily responsibilities. My approach emphasizes mindful, intentional use to minimize this risk.

What should I look for in a safe cannabis product in the Bay Area?

Always purchase from a licensed California dispensary. Products sold in licensed shops are required to undergo third-party lab testing for potency (the amount of THC and CBD) and purity (checking for pesticides, heavy metals, and mold).

Will using CBD oil make me fail a drug test?

It's possible. While pure CBD isolate should not contain THC, full-spectrum CBD products contain trace amounts of THC (less than 0.3%). Over time, this could potentially build up and be detectable on a sensitive drug screen. If you are subject to drug testing, it's crucial to use a product labeled as "THC-Free" or "Broad-Spectrum."

The Science & Philosophy of Holistic Wellness  FAQ

What does "holistic" actually mean?

Holistic means looking at the whole system rather than just one part. A holistic approach to health recognizes that our physical health is inseparable from our mental, emotional, and even spiritual well-being. It's the understanding that stress can affect digestion, or that diet can impact mood.

What is the role of inflammation in chronic disease?

Chronic, low-grade inflammation is now understood to be a common root cause of many modern diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions. It's like a slow-burning fire inside the body. A primary goal of holistic health is to identify and reduce the sources of this inflammation.

What is the nervous system's role in health?

Your autonomic nervous system has two main branches: the sympathetic ("fight or flight") and the parasympathetic ("rest and digest"). Many of us with chronic stress and illness are stuck in a state of "fight or flight," which impairs digestion, healing, and sleep. A key part of our work is learning to activate the "rest and digest" state to promote healing.

What is "mindfulness" and how can it help me?

Mindfulness is simply the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment. For chronic illness, it's a powerful tool. It can help you become more aware of your body's signals, reduce the stress response to pain, and break the cycle of anxious thoughts about your health.

Do you recommend a lot of supplements?

My approach is always food-first. However, targeted supplementation can sometimes be very helpful to correct specific nutrient deficiencies or support certain body systems. Any recommendations would be based on your specific needs and done in collaboration with your primary healthcare provider.

What is the mind-body connection?

The mind-body connection is the scientific understanding that your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can directly impact your physical health. For example, chronic stress (a mind state) can lead to high blood pressure (a physical state). We use tools like mindfulness and stress reduction to leverage this connection for healing.

How important is sleep for managing chronic illness?

Sleep is non-negotiable for health. It's when your body does most of its repair work, consolidates memories, and regulates hormones. Poor sleep is a major driver of inflammation and pain. Improving sleep hygiene is one of the most powerful things we can do to support your health.
